"The Second Life Volunteer Program consists of a team of experienced Residents who have a strong desire to help other Residents in the Second Life world and wish to contribute to the development of the volunteer program. Second Life is a vast world, and learning how to explore it and develop the skills needed to have a positive experience as soon as possible can be a challenge to both new and seasoned Residents alike."
Is this what SL needs?
We need more help for nobs in SL the way in and some of the early choices can be important in how the 2nd life is lived and how much fun they will have. I wish we had better maps of the world in second life - If we could have a way to sail the open sea to that would be great fun! connect the islands like the mainlands

If we are going to make newbies want to stay in SL, this program is a must. At the very least, LL should have some of it's people involved in helping newbies directly at the beginning.
I was lucky because I had a friend already playing in SL when I joined. She taught me so much that I never would have learned otherwise. Honestly, I would have been too frustrated to stay in SL if it hadn't been for her help.
As a Mentor, I may come across as biased but I have to say it is an awesome program... not perfect by any means and always improving/growing. I have personally helped many people who would have quit had it not been for Mentors/Greeters to help them. I was lucky enough to have a husband who was in-world for 6mos before me so he gave me L$ & showed me the ropes but not everyone has that luxury. :o)
