I just recently reactivated my account, the new update got me interested again. Thing is last time I played I grew bored after doing endless amounts of agent missions which were just the same story over and over.
What would you recommend for a new player? Any hints? I never pvped yet in EVE btw, how is that?
My advice would be branch out until you find something you enjoy doing. Eve is a game that won't give you goals to reach or a path to follow, you do that yourself - you're not 'meant' to do anything particular in eve (like missions).
Joining a good corp is also important, but the 'good' part is essential - spend some time reading the forums, seeing who does what and who's good at it, getting stuck in a dead end corp can really suck the fun out of the game.

In my few months of playing I've done what most people find very boring, so you decide whether or not to use my advice.
I have trained 2 accounts both of which have good mining or hauling skills, and ive goten use to using both at the same time to increase my yield. I can now make money extremly easyly, and I can travel into lowsec without worrying about losing my ship. If I do lose a ship it will only take me an hour or two to recover the costs.
Anyway now I can just have fun bulls***ing around in low sec since anything I bring into there is easy to replace!
I do things ingame I find fun, if I get burned out doing too much of something I'll just trying something else for awhile. You should try to figuire out your long and short term goals you want to achieve in the game. Example of my goals where, getting standing for a Jump Clone, ability to do Level4 with worrying getting podded, plug away at some of my learning skill for the long term benefits. Some people set goals for certain ships or just wanting to make the most isk possible. I want to try Invention and Exploration later on. Empyrean is coming out this summer and that should offer alot of new opportunities for everyone.
Scouting has it's role - both in PVE or PVP.
In PVE - there's decent money to be made in finding & exploiting complexes/exploration nodes.
In PVP - a covert ops pilot has a very useful role, though to be perfectly honest it's a role that's seldom needed in small gangs, and only needed in limited numbers for larger gangs.
Re: Your farming gene. If mining appeals to you because you like the idea of building stuff, then by all means go for it. However, if it's the cash flow that's drawing you towards it - in highsec, missioning is highly competative with mining for profit (often better than), and in nilsec ratting wins hands down.
So if it's primarily profit you're after - consider focusing on the combat skills, instead of the industry ones. They'll serve you well if you decided to get involved with pvp, and keep your wallet filled if you stick with pve.

Vegeta, you're absolutely right. Without a player corporation to have fun with, no matter what you do, whether it's mining, fighting, building, exploring, pirating, mercing or being anything in EVE, it is significantly less fun.
Just being in a group of likeminded people and having a common identity as members of that corporation is enough to really motivate you to stay in EVE.
And definitely head down the covert ops route as a scout. The massive sensor boosts are unlike those on any other ship except racial T1 astrometrics frigs like the Imicus and Magnate. Plus you get access to some very useful ship types if you choose to be a cloaker:
- Stealth Bombers: very deadly little frigates and in a squadron with a few covert ops scouts you can cause a tremendous amount of damage in a very short space of time with a bunch of frigates
- Recon Ships: lovely vessels. Can pack cruiser sized firepower if you wish, but most notable for having some insane EW bonuses. For example, the Arazu, with max command skills and modules, can warpscramble someone at up to 48km away, up from the basic maximum of 24 for certain scramblers.
- Black Ops: not great at the moment, but they will be boosted soon as it's high on CCP's priority list after the CSM meeting. General agreement was that it needs more firepower and the ability to fly cloaked for a ship worth over half a billion. Very useful for mercenary corps and alliances though that want to insert covert ships behind a gatecamp with zero risk, and it's definitely seen some limited use as a covert ops flagship in that respect
