As most of you folks now.. there's a terrible shortage of good Sci-Fi movies out there... and in order for us to bring back some past gems to the surface I thought we'd share memory based tips with each other:
Lawnmower man (imba cgi back then)
Blade runner (of course)
Leviathan (deep sea aliens ROCK)
My favorite Space Themed Sci-Fi Movies
2001
Aliens
Fitfh Element
Serenity
Sunshine
alien - solid and good thriller/horror sci fi without cheese and I think the special effects still holds up
aliens - still good, bit more action packed and with some cheese
Blade runner - cant believe it was made in '82
2001 is nice but I tend to always fall asleep when watching it, recommend alot of jolt/coffee or other stimuli to keep you up.
Star Wars - ofc the first movie. Still awesome and will always be. It still amazes me that it was made in the seventies.
Alien - say no more
28 Days Later - everything post apocalyptic rocks
Mad Max 1 - Yet another post apocalyptic/nuclear movie that kicks ass
Brazil - weird but a fun and cool movie
2001 - danish design furniture ftw!
Pitch Black - The hero is a mass murderer!
Event Horizon - some fucked up CGI but still nice footage
Starship Troopers - the mass killing scenes where slimy bug parts fly all over the place is pure art!
The Abyss - first real nice CGI I remeber. Deepsea mysteries ftw!
Blade Runner - everything is just SO cool. Rutger Hauer's speech/poem at the end is just awesome.
Planet of the Apes - Charleton Heston before he became a spokesperson for the NRA.
Screamers - evil critters under ground
Robo Cop - "You have twenty seconds to comply!"
I Robot - I love Isaac Asimov.
The Bicentennial Man - I still love Asimov.
The Running Man - just pure fun with "Arnie" as the running man.
I had forgotten about planet of the apes, thats another one of those sleepy eyes movies... too sleepy for me
Blade Runner - epic win, still can't believe it's an 80's film. The novel is rather boring, so I'm glad they just took one tiny aspect and the names and made it into a life-changing film with some very interesting perspectives
Star Wars III-VI - The original trilogy is naturally great, but III was a very good film for me, redeeming the prequel series entirely
Starship Troopers - "YOU APES WANNA LIVE FOREVER?"
The Fifth Element - great styling, great plot, great execution
Bicentennial Man - Robin Williams did a great job in the '99 adaptation of Asimov's great novel
I, Robot - even though it was pretty much nothing like the great book, it was still a good film standing in it's own right. Asimov wins!
NB: I would love to see a series of movies based on the Foundation novels, they are really where Asimov shines
There's a lot of good sci-fi and a lot I would like to see/see made, but for me this is the best of the best
Here's a couple I could think of....
DUNE - Not sure if anyone mentioned this but such a great movie and book. I heard not too long ago that a remake is going to be done soon, can't wait.
TERMINATOR 2 - Great Sci-fi and an awesome movie IMO.
THE ICE PIRATES - I haven't found too many people who've seen this but it's a funny space movie that I've always liked.
TOTAL RECALL - Was a fun ride although not a great movie. I read the book as well and it was pretty close.
Dune (Frank Herbert's) - DESERT POWER!
Starship Troopers - they really needed the powered suits though
Serenity - can't forget Serenity.Great story and the short action scene between the Alliance and the Reavers is pure awesome.
side note: Ender's game would make an awesome movie. *Hint hint* film producers.
